Why are blood tests done?

When you visit your doctor and he or she takes a blood sample, it is done to determine a physiological and biochemical state such as mineral content, drug effectiveness or an organ function.  A blood test is also done to diagnose a disease or to test for drugs in the blood system.

This blood is usually taken from a vein in your arm with the use of a needle and sometimes the sample comes from a finger prick.  The word “blood” is used in this case but it is the plasma or serum that is used for the testing, not the blood cells.  The list for blood tests offer one for men and one for women. These lists cover everything from general testing to liver, heart and cholesterol, thyroid, diabetes, cancer, hormones and pregnancy.
